Rain vs. Snow

8 Nov

It occurred to me this morning as I was walking the 15-minute route to work. As I sloshed through puddles and clutched dearly to my umbrella, I wondered about one of life’s smallest non-mysteries: rain versus snow. After all, both forms of precipitation are made of the same element. So why is rain so miserable and snow so magical? Rain is like snow’s ugly cousin, and I almost feel bad for it. Except that it is rain and has no emotions, and I do. So really I feel bad for me.

Let’s think about it.

Rain = Emo Bumper Stickers

Words that come to mind when you think of walking in the rain: wet, cold, depressing, nuisance.

Words that come to mind when you think of walking in the snow: powdery mist, refreshing, enchanting, wonderful.

Activities that come to mind when you think of walking in the rain: avoiding speeding cars, jumping in puddles/jumping over puddles (depending on footwear), frantically seeking shelter.

Activities that come to mind when you think of walking in the snow: snowball fights, making a snowman, making snow angels, twirling ’round while soft flakes fall ever so gently on your head.

Natural rain disasters: hurricanes, monsoons, and floods that result in death and destruction.

Snow = Cuba Gooding, Jr. and dogs

Natural snow disasters: blizzards that result in snow days, happiness, and pristine landscapes. (I suppose avalanches are not exactly a positive, but why would I be on a mountain where such a disaster could occur?)

Songs about rain: Les Miserables’ “A Little Fall of Rain”; B.J. Thomas’ “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head”; The Carpenters’ “Rainy Days and Mondays” (ugh, rain and Mondays). Miserable!

Songs about snow: “Let It Snow”; “Winter Wonderland”; Dean Martin’s “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Magical!

Sure, rain has some good points, like sustenance for life and Gene Kelly dance routines. But, as you can see through this flawless and completely unbiased analysis of rain and snow, snow wins.

    Woke up today, wasn’t sure what kind of precipitation was falling- freezing cold rain or sleety snow. Either way thought of the line of the world ending either “by fire or by ice.” just thought I should get a plug in for sleet and watery snow and in the meantime lift your spirits by my morning thoughts of the apocalypse.
